What’s the Difference and Why It Matters
In my practice as a psychologist in Limassol, I often meet people who say they feel “stressed all the time” or “constantly anxious,” but aren’t quite sure which is which. Understanding the difference between stress and anxiety isn’t just about labels—it’s about knowing how to respond and when to seek help.
These two experiences can feel similar, especially in your body, but they are distinct psychological and physiological states with different triggers, durations, and long-term effects.

What Is Stress?
Stress is a natural, short-term response to an external demand or pressure. It typically arises from specific situations like work deadlines, financial difficulties, exams, or family obligations. When you're under stress, your body activates the "fight or flight" system, releasing cortisol and adrenaline to help you cope with the challenge (American Psychological Association [APA], 2023).
In moderate amounts, stress can help you stay alert, focused, and productive. But when it becomes chronic—happening daily or over a long period—it can start to wear you down physically and emotionally. Chronic stress is linked to high blood pressure, sleep issues, weakened immunity, and burnout (APA, 2023).
What Is Anxiety?
Anxiety, while similar in physical sensation, is usually internal, persistent, and not always linked to a specific external trigger. It involves excessive worry, fear, or tension that can last for weeks or even months. Unlike stress, anxiety doesn’t always go away once the “problem” is solved (National Institute of Mental Health [NIMH], 2023).
Common symptoms of anxiety include:
Constant worry that feels out of proportion
Restlessness or difficulty relaxing
Trouble sleeping
Rapid heartbeat or muscle tension
Avoidance of everyday situations
Anxiety can develop into clinical conditions such as Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD), panic disorder, or social anxiety disorder, which often require therapeutic support (NIMH, 2023).
Key Differences Between Stress and Anxiety
Understanding the difference between stress and anxiety is essential for your mental health:
Aspect | Stress | Anxiety |
Cause | External (work, family, deadlines) | Internal (persistent worry or fear) |
Duration | Temporary, tied to situation | Ongoing, even without clear reason |
Relief | Eases when stressor is removed | May continue regardless of situation |
Physical Response | Increased heart rate, tension, irritability | Similar symptoms + excessive mental worry |
Support Needed | Lifestyle adjustments often help | May require therapy for deeper resolution |
Why It Matters for Your Mental Health
Many people in Cyprus, especially working adults and parents, normalize daily stress to the point where early signs of anxiety go unnoticed. When anxiety is misidentified as simple stress, people may rely only on short-term fixes, ignoring deeper emotional patterns that require attention.
As someone offering anxiety therapy in Cyprus, I often work with individuals who have carried anxiety for years, thinking it was “just how life is.” But anxiety is not something you have to live with forever. With the right guidance and therapeutic tools, you can learn how to regulate your emotions, calm your nervous system, and understand your inner world with clarity and compassion.
When to Reach Out for Help
If you’re unsure whether you’re dealing with stress or anxiety, ask yourself:
Do I still feel on edge even when nothing is wrong?
Is my mind constantly racing or preparing for the worst?
Have these feelings lasted more than a few weeks?
Is it interfering with sleep, work, or relationships?
If you answered yes to any of the above, it may be time to consider speaking to a mental health professional.
Therapy can help you:
Identify patterns in your thoughts and behaviors
Understand the root causes of your anxiety
Learn personalized tools to calm the mind and body
Regain confidence and emotional balance

You’re Not Alone
If you're reading this and it resonates, know this: there is nothing wrong with you. Anxiety is a human response to a complex world. But you don’t have to manage it alone.
As a psychologist, I offer both in-person and online therapy sessions across Cyprus. Whether you’re dealing with overwhelming stress, chronic anxiety, or just feel “off” and can’t explain why, I’m here to support you with care, clarity, and respect.
Take the first step. Sometimes all it takes is one conversation to change your path forward.
